Curtin Carnival and Youth Day 2008 was a Blast!

30/8, Miri (AppleBox Pictures)- The Student Council and University Life of Curtin University of Technology Sarawak organized the Curtin Carnival and Youth Day 2008, held in the campus today to celebrate youth and diversity.

The carnival was launched in a ribbon cutting ceremony by the Deputy Chief Minister and Minister of Modernization of Agriculture and Industrial Development, Tan Sri Dr. George Chan Hong Nam together with Datuk Lee Kim Shin and Professor John Evans, Pro Vice-Chancellor of Curtin University Sarawak.

In his welcoming speech, Tan Sri Dr. George Chan Hong Nam urged the young students of Curtin to be innovative and bring out new ideas to challenge and change the old ways of the Miri community. He also urged them to mix around with different cultures to share and exchange ideas with the international students who are also studying in the campus.

The annual carnival is held for the purpose of fundraising by the 27 participating clubs this year. According to Professor John Evans, 3000 coupons have been sold for the carnival this year.

John Curtin Leadership Academy (JCLA) participated for the first time in the carnival. Two community service based teams namely Project Care; aiding for the community of Long Makabar and Fortissimo; reaching out to orphanages in Miri organized their fundraising campaign with exhibitions and games.

The carnivals also concluded the LEO Club Environmental Project in a closing and prize giving ceremony.

Visitors to the carnival had varieties of food choices prepared by the club booths and entertainment by music band performances, stage performances by various clubs and a special performance of Che Ling (Chinese Yoyo).

The grand prizes for this year's lucky draw include a Sony 610e DVD a Nikon Coolpix L16 camera, sponsored by Typhoon Studio and a Sony Playstation Portable.

Special appearances for the carnival were Monkey Tattoos from Kuching who were having an exhibition on the traditional method of tattooing known as tapping and Borneofitness.com, a fitness, nutrition and training consultation service performing a show showcasing body builders.

The carnival ended with a display of fireworks.
